glad you're joining in! I've decided to modify it by either have at least a green smoothie or green juice everyday. I love my juices too Smile

DH is using the vitamix from his mother. He has been making concoctions of spinach, radishes, beets, carrots, celery, sometimes peppers, and unsweetened pineapple juice. I'm more of a fruit girl, but am definitely considering trying more veggie based ones. I might have a goal for 8 times in the month, rather than daily - twice weekly.

Having more greens is an great goal! Stripping them of all fiber does not add any extra benefit. And overall, I find it easier to just chew my food than to wash the juicer.

The reason I like juices because it goes directly into the blood stream faster than smoothies because of the fiber. I also know the importance of the fiber and that's why I alternate. I definitely believe either choice is a great easy way to get more fruits/veggies into our daily diets.

What gives you that energy hit is the sugar. You are removing fiber and complex carbs, and keeping sugar and vitamins (that do start disintegrating much faster the moment you juice it). Your small intestine can extract those vitamins just fine, it is its job. Plus, eating fiber keeps you full longer, keeps sugar levels more stable and keeps things moving properly in your digestive system.

I have nothing against smoothies, I just don't like how infomercials leave people with the impression that juicing or blending your fruits turns veggies from ordinary groceries into something magical that cures incurable diseases and "unlocks nutrition on a cellular level". It is misleading advertizing to sell their product.

Blending doesn't remove any fiber, it only breaks it down into smaller particles that your body can absorb and break down farther. This is something our body doesn't do as efficiently as we age. People with grey hair have had their hair return to their regular color after drinking smoothies for a period of time, amoung other improvements. This is information from the book: Green for Life by Victoria Boutenko.

I know blending does not remove fiber, I was referring to juicing.
There is a benefit to slow, natural absorption rates. For example, sugar is released more slowly, giving you more chance to use it up before insulin will turn it into fat, and releasing energy more continuously, not in a spike. And not all fiber digests, nor is it all meant to be digested. And when it comes to weight, you are likely to consume less calories if you eat the fruit and veggies than if you drink them.

Plus, general "cleanse your body of toxins" claims instantly make me lose respect for the site.
