March Topic of Focus

March 2nd, 2013 at 02:36 am

Last month I focused on completing my legacy drawer and was able to get that done. To keep on the theme of preparing for the unknown, during March my goal is to do a complete inventory of my house. For Christmas my brother gave me a video recorder so I plan on doing a video inventory of both in and out. I've read that I should also open up the cupboards, drawers and go through the closets to show exactly how much stuff I own.

I will only put the big items in the home inventory software and use the video to capture everything. Do you have a inventory of all your possessions? If not, how will you prove to the insurance company that you owned things? Just food for thought

I did take a video of our home in 2006. Of course, I should do it again now that we have moved! I gave the video to my parents to hold on to, figuring if there were a house disaster the video should be kept safe somewhere else!

We suffered a break-in and found it was incredibly useful to have pictures of stuf! The claims agent could see the dents on the carpet where the TV sat and still insistedI prove we owned a TV. I had lots of holiday photos of people in different rooms which clearly showed electronics, stacks of DVDs, Wii, laptops etc taken with a digital camera. Since that horrid experience, made worse by the State Farm claim's agent, I snap a photo of any modestly expensive item. We were shocked at home much it costs to replace the dozens of small items taken. 6 months after the fact we were still discovering missing items.

For anyone leaving photos on their iPod/laptop/computer, I suggest you copy to a disc or at least a Thumb drive as your computer will likely be stolen if you have a break-in.

Excellent suggestion..we had a video at some point....should do it again....we own different things than we did when we first did it.

And I second Snafu's suggestion....when you get something new...make sure to get a picture or video of that.

Probably a good idea to do it at least once a year.
